- I happened to find that Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu was published in Kindle version, so I read it, thinking “Ah, how I miss this.” Afterwards, I received an e-mail from Production I.G producer Kuroki (Rui) asking me “Are you interested in Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu?” I replied “I’m re-reading it!” (laughs)
- What a coincidence!
- I was surprised. At that time, I asked whether they’re going to do a new anime adaptation of Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu, and he replied, “How about doing the series composition?”
- Have you ever read the original novels before that?
- I did, back when I was in my 20s. I thought it was very interesting. Even when I re-read it this year, I still thought that it’s such an interesting work. I read it for the fascinating characters at the first time, but now as I re-read it I discovered new things. I think this is a work that will keep on giving no matter how many times you re-read it.
- Have you ever watched the anime adaptation by director Ishiguro Noburo?
- Actually, I had never watched the anime properly. After it was decided that I joined the new production, I bought the Blu-ray Box and watched the anime. It was really awesome. The content made us think “If we adapt this novel into anime, then it must be done like this”. Especially, the sсript written by Shudou-san was amazing. (Shudou Takashi wrote the sсript for the movie My Conquest Is the Sea of Stars and episodes 1-3 of the first OVA.)
- What did you talk about with director Tada (Shunsuke) when you began composing the series and writing the sсript for Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu Die Neue These?
- The first thing we talked about was, Up to where should we do (the TV series). I don’t think we talked about anything that’s too detailed.
- Was there anything especially difficult about writing the sсript for an anime with 30 minutes for each episode based on the vast content of the original work?
- Difficult… Because the content of the original work is very solid, there was nothing especially difficult. However, I thought about how to make something that would live up to the original work. Because Tanaka (Yoshiki)-sensei’s writing is wonderful, I wanted to keep the dialogues and the descriptions as much as possible. Although there were parts that I had to cut out with tears running down my face, there were also parts that I expanded. Other scriptwriters who are responsible for the sсript of each episode are splendid writers too, so I believe they also put in interesting content.
- Was there any exceptional order from director Tada since you started working on the sсript?
- If I tell you anything specific that would be a spoiler (laughs) However, I wanted to show the drama of each character. From the beginning, I told them I didn’t want to sweep past the characters from a bird’s eye view, but instead looking at them from up close.
- But if you describe the drama of the characters one by one, I think naturally there will be more and more of switching of point of view, and the sсript will also grow in volume.
- Although for an average anime the sсript usually should be about one book long, often times (the whole sсript) can’t fit into the storyboard.
- There are so many fascinating characters in this work, but are there any that you especially like?
- I have many… For instance, I like (Walter von) Schoenkopf. I also think (Paul von) Oberstein a fascinating character.
- Please also tell us your impressions of the seiyuu that have been announced so far.
- They’re truly wonderful. When I heard Miyano (Mamoru)’s Reinhart, I thought “So there’s this kind of finesse.” I think it’s absolutely, totally interesting. We’ve worked together on another work before, and he’s a person with a very special acting ability. I’m really looking forward for how he reads those lines of Reinhart.
- The voice recording has begun; have you gone to see it?
- No, I haven’t. I have only seen footage and the published PV, but since I really feel that this is going to be an awesome work, I’m really looking forward to it. I want to watch the completed version quick.
- For you personally, what kind of work do you want Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu Die Neue These to be?
- I want this work to be the work of my lifetime – the first season that would start in April, the second season that would be broadcasted next year and even after that. I’m so astonished myself that I became involved in Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu. There must have been many people of my trade who thought “If Gineiden is adapted once again into anime, I want to do it!” I don’t want to betray their expectations. That’s because I myself have felt the regret of not being able to participate in adapting a novel I really loved into an anime.
- What’s your message for everyone who’s waiting to enjoy the anime starting in April?
- This applies to any work adapted from an original work, but the most important thing I try to do is not to diminish what makes the original work interesting. This time it’s my intention too. I hope this will be a work through which I can share the love towards the original work with the people who love it. Please look forward to it.
